A Turkmen court has handed down 10- to 25-year prison sentences to 40
military officers convicted of responsibility in the July 7 Abadan
explosions, Khronika Turkmenistana reported August 11. Seven defendants
received the longest sentences, of 20-25 years. Defendants included the
commander of the military unit whose territory contains the Abadan
munitions depots, Fifteen people were killed in the explosions,
according to the government, but independent organisations say hundreds
died.
